Dear Mr Suralkar:
Subject: Request for BBMP Policy to Include Neutering of Abandoned Pedigree Dogs in ABC Programs
On behalf of the CJ Memorial Trust, we request that BBMP establishes a clear and formal policy for the neutering of all abandoned dogs, regardless of breed. Currently, BBMP’s Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers neuter only Indie or street dogs, leaving many abandoned pedigree dogs outside the scope of this critical program. For example, in September 4 Labs/Golden Retrievers were found ill and abandoned in Richmond Town alone, and 4 boxers in Fraser Town. Many are breeder discards or abandoned pet dogs. Many are dumped in Hebbal or Queens Veterinary hospital campus. This heart-breaking trend across all of Bangalore. It needs to be addressed.
With an increasing number of pedigree dogs being abandoned on the streets, rescuers are shouldering unsustainable medical and neutering expenses in private facilities, which are both exorbitant and difficult to manage. Although BBMP occasionally facilitates neutering for abandoned pedigree dogs on a case-by-case basis, there is no clarity or standardized process, often leading to significant delays and placing an undue burden on rescuers.
A formal policy that includes both Indie and pedigree dogs under the ABC program would not only reduce the street dog population more effectively but also alleviate the pressure on an already stretched animal welfare system. For efficient implementation, we propose that ABC centers accept rescued dogs brought in by rescuers or facilitate pick-up when needed.
We kindly request a written confirmation from BBMP that neutering for all abandoned dogs falls within the ABC program’s scope and will be universally supported across BBMP’s ABC centers. Your support in formalizing this policy will make a significant difference in the lives of abandoned animals and the rescuers committed to their welfare.
Thank you for your attention and prompt response to this pressing issue.
Warm regards,
Priya Chetty-Rajagopal
